Chinese cultures are rich in traditions about superstitions and principles that bring about good fortune. They often play an important role when Chinese buyers purchase real estate, and with good reason — it’s natural to want good energy and good luck in your home. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of Chinese property superstitions and principles you may want to consider when purchasing a strata property, for good luck and prosperity.

1. Numerology

When thinking about Chinese property superstitions, numerology is often one of the first that comes to mind.  According to this  Chinese superstition, certain numbers are considered lucky or unlucky based on their pronunciation. Having the right street number, unit number, building floor or price will bring luck and prosperity. On the flip side, unlucky numbers will bring bad luck or unfavourable circumstances such as illness or even death.

The number 4 is thought of as unlucky because it sounds like the word for death, while 8 is considered a very lucky number as it sounds like the word for wealth.

2. Prosperous colours

Those who take Chinese property superstitions into consideration when purchasing real estate may look favourably on strata properties that feature the colour red. Red is considered a very lucky colour according to Chinese traditions. During the Lunar New Year, red is used to decorate homes as the colour is believed to be able to scare away evil spirits. More modern beliefs associate the colour with happiness, wealth, royalty and prosperity.

3. Door position

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice that has fast become part of a home design and renovation trend in the western world. Followers of Chinese property principles will likely consider the spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (chi).  One of the ways to avoid “good luck” from escaping provides for chi (or positive energy) to circulate within the home by not having the front door directly aligned with a backdoor, as this would allow chi to flow directly out the backdoor.

4. Location

Homes that face a T-intersection or are on busy streets are looked upon unfavourably by many who follow Chinese property superstitions and principles. This is because the noise and disruption are said to cause chi to spin, creating negative energy. Homes below street level should be avoided too, as this can create problems with finances and relationships. However, being near water is advantageous as water is the only substance that can hold chi.

5. Land shape

Those who follow Chinese property superstitions and principles will pay close attention to the land on which a strata property is located. According to Chinese customs, the ideal block of land to generate chi is rectangular in shape and slopes upward. The slope represents the property’s future growth in value.
